چکیده

We have been developing “ToolDevice,” a set of devices to help novice users in performing various operations in a mixed reality (MR) space. ToolDevice imitates the familiar shapes, tactile sensation, and operational feedback sounds of hand tools that are used in everyday life. For example, we developed BrushDevice, KnifeDevice, TweezersDevice, and HammerDevice. Currently, KnifeDevice is insufficiency in force feedback. This paper proposes a tactile feedback model for cutting a virtual object utilizing two vibration motors and the principles of phantom sensation. We built a prototype to implement the proposed feedback model, and confirmed the usability of our model through an experiment. Finally, we redesigned KnifeDevice and implemented the tactile sensation on the basis of the results of the experiment.

Affordable Immersive Projection System for 3D Interaction

This paper describes an affordable Virtual Reality system designed and developed by a group of researchers at the Polytechnic University of Catalunya (UPC). The system allows direct selection and manipulation of virtual 3D objects. The interaction is based on stereoscopic images projected over the user’s working space and on devices tracking the user’s natural movements. The system includes a s...

Design and Qualitative Evaluation of Tactile Devices for Stroke Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation environments combining virtual reality with everyday motor tasks can promote recovery from neurological illness, such as stroke. Tactile devices, providing physical stimulation to the skin, may improve motor retraining. While many tactile devices have been reported, there is a distinct paucity of studies evaluating how they are perceived. This multidisciplinary research has inves...

Using a Fingertip Tactile Device to Substitute Kinesthetic Feedback in Haptic Interaction

A prototype of a joystick where the kinesthetic feedback is substituted by tactile feedback is proposed. Tactile feedback is provided by a wearable device able to apply vertical stress to the fingertip in contact with the joystick. To test the device, rigid wall rendering is considered. Preliminary experiments show that the sensation of touching a virtual wall using the force feedback provided ...

The Virtual Haptic Back Project

This paper discusses the Ohio University Virtual Haptic Back (VHB) project, including motivation, implementation, and initial evaluations. Haptics is the science of human tactile sensation and a haptic interface provides force and touch feedback to the user from virtual reality. The VHB combines high-fidelity computer graphics with haptic feedback to augment training in palpatory diagnosis in O...

Development of a Surgical Knife Device for a Multi-Fingered Haptic Interface Robot

This paper presents the design of a surgical knife device for a multi-fingered haptic interface robot called HIRO, and summarizes the experimental results. HIRO consists of a robot arm and a five-fingered hand, and is able to handle the tool with fingers. A variety of tools can be attached to HIRO, and the system is therefore able to present the force sensation of many tool-type devices. For ex...
